4.7 magnitude earthquake in the Los Angeles area.
Though no injuries or damages were reported immediately, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Los Angeles area. It happened as the region dealt with three major wildfires burning east of Los Angeles that torched dozens of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. During a blistering heat wave, these blazes erupted that have now subsided. California Institute of Technology seismologist Lucy Jones said, “It’s a garden-variety Southern California earthquake.”
What did the US Geological Survey say?
The US Geological Survey said it was centered four miles north of Malibu and was around seven miles below the surface. The jolt was felt as far as 45 miles away in Orange County, where residents reported items moving in their homes. It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.
“Hardest quake yet.’
Officials around the region said that authorities were surveying for damage but had not found anything major so far. Bruce Silverstein, a Malibu Council member, said that he had lived in the community for 13 years and that this was the hardest quake yet, but nothing broke. He said, “Our house shook for about two or three seconds. I was concerned the windows were going to pop.”
A camera at the 115-year-old Santa Monica Pier, about twelve miles from Malibu, showed several seconds of intense shaking during the quake. Cameras in television studios also shook. People, including celebrities, took to social media to post that they were awakened by the jolt.
