Divine Ikubor (Rema): Afrobeats Star, Songwriter, and Global Phenomenon

December 26, 2024

Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, is a Nigerian musician, singer, and songwriter who has emerged as one of the leading voices in the global Afrobeats movement. Known for his unique sound, which blends Afrobeats, trap, and pop influences, Rema has captivated audiences worldwide and established himself as one of the most influential young artists of his generation.

Born on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Nigeria, Rema’s musical journey began in the church, where he developed his vocal skills and love for performance. His talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly gained recognition in his hometown before catching the attention of music executives.

In 2019, Rema signed with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records, one of Nigeria’s most prominent music labels. His debut EP, Rema, catapulted him into the limelight, with hits like Dumebi and Iron Man garnering millions of streams and international acclaim. Iron Man was even featured on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist, further solidifying Rema’s global appeal.

Since then, Rema has continued to break barriers with his genre-defying sound. In 2022, he released his debut album, Rave & Roses, which featured chart-topping singles like Calm Down. The remix of Calm Down, featuring Selena Gomez, became a global hit, dominating charts and earning certifications in multiple countries. The success of this track firmly positioned Rema as a global superstar.

Beyond music, Rema is a cultural icon and a voice for the youth. He often speaks about the importance of hard work, staying true to oneself, and overcoming challenges. His humility and dedication to his craft have made him a role model for aspiring artists in Africa and beyond.

Rema has received numerous awards, including The Headies and international recognitions, and he continues to perform on some of the world’s biggest stages. At just 24 years old, he has achieved milestones that many artists can only dream of, yet he remains committed to pushing the boundaries of his art.

Divine Ikubor, or Rema, is more than just an artist; he is a trailblazer, bringing Afrobeats to new audiences and inspiring a generation to dream big and embrace their unique identities.
