Nzambi Matee is a Kenyan environmentalist, entrepreneur, and innovator whose groundbreaking work is transforming the construction and recycling industries. As the founder of Gjenge Makers, Nzambi has developed a sustainable solution to address plastic waste by converting discarded plastics into eco-friendly, durable construction materials. Her work exemplifies the power of innovation in tackling global environmental challenges.

Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Nzambi pursued a background in engineering and material science. After working in the oil and gas industry, she became increasingly frustrated with the growing plastic pollution problem in Kenya and its impact on urban environments. Determined to make a difference, Nzambi quit her job and began experimenting with ways to repurpose plastic waste.

In 2017, she founded Gjenge Makers, a social enterprise dedicated to turning plastic waste into bricks that are stronger, lighter, and more affordable than traditional concrete bricks. Using a unique process that mixes recycled plastic with sand, Gjenge Makers produces paving bricks that are ideal for use in construction projects such as walkways and driveways. The company’s innovative approach not only provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional materials but also helps reduce the overabundance of plastic waste in Kenya.

Nzambi’s work has garnered international acclaim. In 2020, she was awarded the prestigious Young Champion of the Earth prize by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), recognizing her as one of the world’s leading environmental innovators. Through her enterprise, she has created job opportunities for local communities, empowered women in the workforce, and contributed to sustainable urban development.

Nzambi Matee’s vision and dedication serve as an inspiration for tackling environmental challenges with creativity and purpose. Her innovative efforts at Gjenge Makers are not only helping to build a greener future but also proving that sustainability and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand.
