The Academy Award winner told host Fragoso that he got the inspiration for his acceptance speech at the Oscars in 2020 while he “was talking with my mom and my wife.” Moments later, he called the Carol star by her first name, confirming he was indeed talking about her. He said, “Rooney was like, ‘That’s what you should say!’” Despite referring to Rooney as his wife publicly for the first time on the podcast, Phoenix refrained from clarifying his alleged marital status.
