Allegedly, the football legend’s mansion became a target because it was illegally constructed, and the activists spray-painted the mansion to show the rich’s responsibility for the climate crisis, said Futuro Vegetal.

On Tuesday, climate activists spray-painted Lionel Messi’s mansion in Spain to show the responsibility of the rich for the climate crisis. Campaigners from the group Futuro Vegetal released a video that showcased two members standing in front of the house near the cove of Cola Tarida on Ibiza’s western coast, holding a banner that read, “Help the Planet — Eat the Rich — Abolish the Police.” The climate activists then went ahead and spray-painted the white facade of the building red and black. They said they wanted to show how responsible the rich should be in helping with the climate crisis.

Citing a 2023 Oxfam report, Futuro Vegetal highlighted how the report has found that the wealthiest one percent of the world’s population generated the same amount of carbon emissions in 2019 as the poorest two-thirds of humanity, despite knowing that the most vulnerable communities have been fighting and experiencing the worst consequences of the climate crisis.
