The government in Nepal has ordered the closure of schools and halting of all ongoing exams.

 

Heavy rains and massive floods have lashed out entire Nepal, so much so that, as per recent reports, thus far, 66 individuals have lost their lives, and 69 people have gone missing. Also, reports suggest that 226 homes have been submerged due to the enormous floodwaters.

Due to massive floods in the country, at least 66 people have died, and over 60 have been injured in the floods and landslides that occurred due to heavy rains across Nepal. Dil Kumar Tamang, Nepal home ministry spokesperson, told Reuters that the death toll could rise, with another 69 people reported missing and 60 injured since Friday morning. Bishwo Adhikari, Nepal Police deputy spokesperson, told PTI that out of 66 people killed, 34 deaths were in the Kathmandu valley, which is home to 4 million people. Highways have been blocked in 63 locations across the Himalayan nation, said the Nepal Police official. Authorities also said that most rivers in the country have swollen, spilling over roads and bridges.

 

An emergency meeting will be held by the Nepal acting PM.

Prakash Man Singh, acting prime minister of Nepal, has now called for an emergency meeting, as per a report by PTI. The meeting involves various ministers, including the Home Minister, the Home Secretary, and chiefs of security agencies. The government declared closure for all schools nationwide and halted all ongoing exams. Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, had a power cut the entire day as the main transmission line was obstructed due to the floods; however, the power resumed in the evening. Due to landslides triggered by rains, all entry points to Kathmandu have also been obstructed.

 

Homes have been submerged due to floods.

Police reported that 226 homes have been submerged in Kathmandu, and the Nepal Police have deployed a rescue team of around 3,000 security personnel in the affected areas. Ramesh Lekhak, Nepal’s home minister, told AP, “The government’s priority right now is to rescue the people and help those who have been affected.”
