The disastrous flooding in Morocco has caused distress among citizens, with a few dead and many others missing.
Weather conditions in Morocco are currently quite challenging, considering how the disastrous floods have caused mayhem in the lives of the residents. On Sunday, Moroccan authorities said that four people lost their lives, while 14 individuals were missing in flooding caused by an “exceptional” climate phenomenon in southern areas.
People lose lives, and others are missing due to the floods.
A local official told AFP, “Four people have died and 14 have gone missing,” caused by heavy rains since Friday in the province of Tata, which is around 740 km south of Rabat. The official said that the toll could potentially rise. He said, “Eight houses were washed away by floods in some valleys” near a rural area in the Tata region called Tamanart. The areas such as southern Morocco and Algeria have suffered massive rainfall since Friday. Areas in southern Morocco have been affected “by a volatile tropical air mass, said Lhoussaine Youabd, Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology to AFP, leading “to the formation of unstable and violent clouds.”
Heavy thunderstorms and significant rainfall.
Youabd described the phenomenon as “exceptional” and said the areas saw “heavy thunderstorms and significant rainfall,” leading to river flooding” as “humid tropical air masses moved northward.” According to the Moroccan weather service, the Ouarzazate region received 47 millimeters of water in three hours, while Tagounite, near the Algerian border, received some 170 millimeters.
Authorities in neighboring Algeria confirmed that one person was dead and one was missing amidst the flooding in the south. An unnamed young girl has been swept away, said the Algerian civil defense, by the waters in Illizi, in the far south, and another person who was trapped in a vehicle was still missing.
