On October 1, Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter Jr.) celebrated his 100th birthday. He became the first former US President to reach the milestone of completing 100 years. His journey of becoming the US President has inspired people worldwide, for he also rose as a Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian and an advocate for democracy. On Tuesday, October 1, Jimmy Carter celebrated his 100th birthday and became the first former US President to complete a full century. After serving in his presidential term from 1977 to 1981, he continued working for more than four decades leading The Carter Center, co-founded in 1982 by him and his wife Rosalynn to “wage peace, fight disease, and build hope.”

Jason Carter, his grandson, speaks about the former president’s milestone.

In an interview, Jason Carter, the former president’s grandson and chair of The Carter Center governing board, said, “Not everybody gets 100 years on this earth, and when somebody does, and when they use that time to do so much good for so many people, it’s worth celebrating.” He continued, “These last few months, 19 months, now that he’s been in hospice, it’s been a chance for our family to reflect and then for the rest of the country and the world to really reflect on him. That’s been a really gratifying time.”

James Early Carter Jr. was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, where he lived over 80 years of his 100 years. The US President Joe Biden, who served as the first sitting senator to endorse Carter’s 1976 campaign, praised his longtime friend for an “unwavering belief in the power of human goodness.” In a tribute video filmed in front of Carter’s presidential portrait at the White House, he said, “You’ve always been a moral force for our nation and the world (and) a beloved friend to Jill and me and our family.” The Carter Center on September 17 had hosted a musical gala in Atlanta for celebrating Carter with a range of genres and artists. The event raised over $1.2 million for the center’s programs.
