Brazil’s current crackdown on X, owned by Elon Musk, has been making headlines for a couple of days. Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes has ordered an “immediate and complete suspension” of the social media platform unless it complies with all court orders. The Judge has also warned that individuals or businesses using virtual private networks (VPNs) for accessing X will also be heavily fined.
Brazil will levy heavy fines on those using VPNs to access X.
The Supreme Court Judge also ordered that those using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access X would be fined R$50,000 ($8,900) daily. According to a BBC report, the conflict in Brazil regarding X began in April when Judge de Moraes ordered the suspension of dozens of X accounts over alleged disinformation. However, X refused to comply, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that some of the X accounts that the Supreme Court Judge asked to suspend included several journalists and sitting members of the Brazilian parliament.
X Global Government Affairs account claimed Judge de Moraes threatened the company.
In a post on X, it was claimed by X Global Government Affairs account that when it tried to defend its actions in a Brazilian court, Judge de Moraes threatened the company’s legal representative with imprisonment. Even after X’s legal representative left the platform, her bank accounts were frozen.
According to a report on Reuters, Brazil’s telecommunication agency’s head noted that it is proceeding with compliance to suspend X in the country. Judge de Moraes gave companies like Google and Apple five days to remove X from their Brazil app stores and block the social media platform from their devices.
